This is our 3rd day with the truck, and so far every moment of the last 2 have been amazing. We rode up into really remote mountain villages where the people are friendly and wave at us when we go by. We found a really beautiful hike in Doi Inthanon national park and continued through to Mae Hong Son where we stayed for the night. The 2nd day we drove for a while to a tribe where the women use coils to make their necks long then continued to some enorrrrrmous caves where we hired a guide to float us into them on a raft and lead us around with a giant torch lamp. At the other side of the caves we waited for sunset when hundreds of thousands of swifts (birds) spiral around in huge circles in the air for a while before the fly into the cave in a huge stream together to sleep at night. It was an amazing sight, and not one that I can capture with pictures in the slightest.
We stayed in a nice guesthouse by a river for about 2 dollars each last night, and a worse hotel in Mae Hong Son that cost about 3 dollars each. Been eating lots of fresh fruit and assorted noodle, rice, and curry dishes. I bought a whole delicious pineapple which they were nice enough to cut up for me at a random roadside market for about 50 cents. I’m happy to report that I haven’t had any sort of sickness or anything yet from the food or mosquitoes.
I’ve been having an amazing time and the next week looks promising as well. I’m really happy to be in the mountains again and to not be able to count the stars (usually about 10 in Tokyo). No pictures because I gotta get back on the road, but I’ve certainly been taking them.
Hope everything is great in other parts of the world!
