A year ago if you had told me that I would soon find myself in Tokyo raucously singing and dancing to Ricky Martin in a karaoke room with a bunch of native Spanish speakers I would have said “Hey man! That’s crazy! No way!”
Last night I met up with Claudia and the other Spanish speakers I described a few posts ago, plus a couple more people from Barcelona. They wanted to go to a club and, having never been to one myself, I figure Tokyo is as good a place as any to experience this. I met them in Roppongi and we tried to go to a couple they knew of but the first one we were too young for (23 for guys) and the second one we weren’t allowed in because one of the guys was wearing shorts that exposed 10 inches of his leg at the bottom. Oopss. Once we finally found one we left it almost immediately upon entering. The place was insanely crowded and we wanted to not be completely crushed up against people the entire night. After wandering around for longer and going to a couple more bars and clubs that have insane drink prices we are enticed by a Karaoke sign to check out the place.
5 hours of karaoke and nomihodai (it means All you can drink, the third word you learn here after “Arigato” and “Konnichiwa”) for 3000 yen (a little less than 30 dollars). Sounds like a fantastic time, and it most certainly was. They have a wider variety of drinks than just beer at this place. You pick up a phone on the wall and order whenever you want something and they bring it right to you.
Karaoke starts pretty calm and timid but once you get about an hour into it all nobody cares what anybody thinks of their singing voice anymore and really just lets loose. 2 or 3 hours into it everybody is dancing around like idiots and singing along to every single song, whether or not they’ve ever actually heard it. I mean, the words are up on the screen, why not sing along? What difference does it make if their in Spanish and I can’t understand a word of it? Or if it’s Ricky Martin? Or the macarena? Or Shakira?
After it was over around 5 am I made the 3 subway line, hour long ride back to Azalea house extremelllly tired and hungry. McDonalds breakfast was a godsend when I got out of the station near home. I was really proud of myself at the time for being able to order a really delicious Sausage muffin. I ate it with a huge grin on my face then got another.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Geoffrey Tompkins for helping me to fix this machine. My computer is working now so I can get pictures online! yeyeyeyeyeeee! Thanks Tucker and Philip as well for offering to upload the cd for me.
These pictures are from last Thursday when I met Chris (another exchange student from Kansas), Moe, and Kyoko and we went to Shibuya in search of a messanger bag for me. We didn’t have much luck but it was still a fantastic day exploring Tokyo. We went into a lot of way-too-expensive stores then checked out the huge Yoyogi park and saw some of Harajuku again. We ate dinner at a very reasonably priced sushi restaurant that had sushi going around a conveyor belt near where everybody sits. You just grab what looks delicious, or order something special from the menu.
Are these pictures too big, by the way?
