Laos is… not Thailand. At all. It’s considerably less developed. In Thailand there are ATMs set up all over the place, even in some of the really remote cities we stayed at. In Laos there are ATMs in 2 cities in the entire country, the closest of which I’m a 2 day boat ride from. But that’s ok, because I managed to cross this river back into Thailand, get more money, and come back after I figured this out.
The plan right now is to head up to Luang Namtha, Continuing onto Muang Sing near the China/Laos/Burma border. I’m going to find some sort of wilderness trek that I’ve heard are quite nice up there then backtrack a bit and on March 2nd people from The Gibbon Experience will pick me up and take me to their place for a 3 day 2 night, uh, Gibbon Experience(?). Not sure exactly what to expect from it but everybody that has done it says it’s amazing so I’m pretty excited.
The Gibbon Experience people will return me here to the border at Huay Xai and then I’ll head back into Thailand for a few days before I meet Moe in Bangkok on March 7th.
I may be splitting off with Allan and/or Nick tomorrow, it depends on what they want to do. Either way is good though.
Internet is pretty awful up here so I’m not sure what’s going to happen with it but the next 2 weeks look promising and I’m really looking forward to it all. The Gibbon Experience looks especially promising: living in treehouses, zip line cable network to connect everything, beautiful hiking and views, and possibly gibbons (a type of Ape). Awesomeeee!
