It’s pretty insane that I’m Tokyo right now. I swear I was just in Raleigh and now *wooooooooooosh* I’m in this crazy place. The plane flights weren’t too bad. Many, many thanks to Danielle, Geoff, Billy, Mom, and Dad for getting up at 3:30 am and coming to the airport with me. It was a wonderful way to go and it helped me stay positive the entire trip.
The plane rides were both pretty uneventful, but when I got to Tokyo’s Narita airport I quickly became that person you feel sorry for who’s standing alone at the baggage claim anxiously hoping that their bag will magically come down the ramp even though no bags have come down for 10 minutes and everybody else is long gone. So, yeah, I don’t know how they did it but they managed to lose one of my bags but not the other one. So I have all of my clothes but I’m missing all of my toiletries, my sleeping bag, my tripod, all my computer cables, battery chargers, and some other important things. They got my hopes up by calling my dorm last night and saying they found it and they would come by with it but they never did. It’ll probably show up today. In the meanwhile I’m just pretty stinky, I can’t use my computer, and I have nothing to sleep on. I curled up with my bart simpson towel last night and, despite being absurdly tired, only managed to get 6 hours of sleep, waking up at 5 am this morning.
It turned out that there was, in fact, an extremelyyy helpful girl from Sophia university waiting with a sign complete with my purty little name on it. She was nice enough to escort me to my room which took a train ride, 3 subway rides, and a 10 minute walk (2 hours total). I suppose you could call where I’m staying an “apartment” but I think you’d be giving it more credit than it’s due. It’s basically just a single dorm room with a tiny, tiny bathroom, a small fridge, 1 burner, a toaster, and a small closet. I’m on the 4th floor though and I have a nice little balcony as well.
Today is orientation at Sophia for all the exchange students so in a couple hours we’re all going to hop on the subway and I’ll be in downtown Tokyo for the first time, woo wooo! Other than the lost luggage things are going great and will surely be even better today.
